Szechenyi Spa Baths FAQ

First time visitors in Szechenyi Bath often ask many questions. There are some misconceptions about the baths, e.g. some visitors think that you need to be naked in the baths (no, quite the contrary), that Szechenyi is a Turkish bath (no, it is not), where the pools are separate for men and women (they are not).

Please note that online tickets cost an extra approx. 1 Euro, which means not having to stand in a queue / long line, as you will check in via our Help Desk, where our receptionist speak very good English.

WHERE – Szechenyi Baths?

Where is Szechenyi Spa Baths?

Szechenyi Spa Baths is close to the city centre of Budapest: by M1 metro (underground) you can easily get to the world famous bath complex in 15 minutes from the heart of the city, i.e. from the transit hub square called Deak Square (Deák tér), where all Budapest metro lines meet. Szechenyi Baths is in the City Park, a 5 minute walk from Heroes’ Square (you know, the Heroes’ Square with the tall monument with an angel on top?  It is often seen on most Budapest postcards and travel brochures: a must see anyway).

Where am I in Szechenyi Baths? It is a Maze

Szechenyi Baths Map with Fahrenheit
Szechenyi Baths Map with Fahrenheit

I got lost in the labyrinth of the huge Szechenyi Baths. Where am I? Please print out our internal map of Szechenyi Spa Baths to help you navigate around the maze of pools, saunas, steam rooms, long corridors of cabins and massage rooms, etc. The building is enormous, and it is best to have a little map with you, if you feel uncomfortable in unknown places.

If you buy our online ticket, you will be given your own Szechenyi Bath Map to help you navigate more easily.

WHEN – Szechenyi Baths?

When is Szechenyi Baths open? Some units close earlier, while others are open longer. The indoor facilities and pools are open from 6 am to 7 pm every day of the week, and the outdoor facilities and pools are open from 6 am to 10 pm every day. Szechenyi Baths is also open on national holidays and bank holidays, 365 days a year. However, the thermal baths may have shorter opening times on holidays.

When are Szechenyi Night Bath Parties? Mostly on Saturdays. Click on the link to find out more about Szechenyi Parties. The bath parties are from June to September in Szechenyi Bath (Szecska Parties), and from October to May in Lukacs Bath (Magic Bath Parties)

When are there guided tours in Szechenyi Baths? Every day, by day in the peak hours. Szechenyi Bath Tours are very short (approx. 15 minutes) where you can take a look around the pools, the richly decorated lobby, reception hall, etc. See more details about Szechenyi Tours for visitors.

Can I visit Szechenyi Baths at night? The indoor pools, saunas and steam rooms. (in one word the so called Thermal Section) close at 7 pm. So if you want to enjoy the indoor facilities, we recommend timing your arrival at the Szechenyi Baths at 4pm – 5pm to have at least 2-3 hours for getting to the building, queuing for your tickets (you can buy your fast track bath ticket and entrance via our booking form on the left), getting changed, finding the pools you wish to enjoy, getting ready to leave (shower, hair wash, etc.) and checking out of Szechenyi Baths.

When can I go in the morning to Szechenyi Baths? The earliest time to visit Szechenyi Baths is at 6 am. If you are an early riser or you just need to cure your headache after an all night party, you will enjoy Szechenyi Baths. Yep, early risers are absolutely welcome. After all, Szechenyi Baths is in fact ‘Szechenyi Thermal Baths and Pool’ with a big swimming pool for doing laps too (trainings are typically in the morning).

In addition, Szechenyi Baths is also a medicinal institute of aqua therapy, healing with its water, and some patients who have been prescribed its waters can enjoy the baths earlier. Hospital patients have separate pools and separate entrance. Please note that some of the spa treatments and aqua therapy, like mud treatment, is only available for hospital patients and not for the general public.

WHAT – Szechenyi Baths?

What is a Cabin at the Szechenyi Baths? And what is a Locker? Why is a cabin more expensive than a locker? Can I not buy a ticket with a locker (or a cabin)? Cabins are private changing rooms, which are used for getting changed and also storing your belongings. Lockers are storage boxes, the average lockers you would find at a train station, for instance. Lockers are usually man size, so you will have ample room to keep your swim gear, street wear, shoes and a bag /  backpack.

What are the baths and pools like at Szechenyi Spa Baths? See our printable Szechenyi Spa Baths Map here in Fahrenheit or in Celsius with all the important info of the baths, pools, saunas, massage rooms, steam rooms, etc. There are 18 pools of various sizes and temperatures: 1 big swimming pool in the open air, flanked by two outdoor thermal pools, one of which has a fun whirlpool. The 15 indoor pools are bigger and smaller pools with different water characteristics, temperature, underwater jets, shape, etc.

What are the ‘sparties’ / Szecska spa parties? Read more about the Szecska Saturday night parties here. Saturday night laser show and DJ parties in the baths. Very popular, very unique, only in Budapest!

What is the Dress Code at Szechenyi Baths? The dress code of Szechenyi Bath is very simple: please wear a swimming suit, bikini, speedo, etc. at all times, in all pools, and all bath facilities. Swim wear is obligatory. Flip flops are warmly recommended, as the soles of flipflops, slippers, barefoot guests, who come and go in the pool areas, leave marks on the floors. There are far too many guests in the thermal baths to keep a spotless floor all the time. The bath is huge, and there are hundreds, often thousands of guests inside Szechenyi Bath. It is best to protect your feet with light flip-flops. If you have no flip-flops, you can buy a pair in the main hall in Szechenyi Bath.

HOW – Szechenyi Baths?

How can I get to Szechenyi Spa Baths?

Main Hall of Szechenyi Baths
Main Hall of Szechenyi Baths – photo by Katherine Hala

The easiest way to get to Szechenyi Baths (or Szechenyi Furdo in Hungarian) is by taking the historical M1 metro (the 2nd underground in Europe, built right after the one in London!). M1 is the yellow line, which runs right down under Andrassy Avenue from the city centre. There is a metro station right by Szechenyi Spa Baths. The name of the metro station is the Hungarian name of the spa: Szechenyi Furdo (say: ‘Say-chain-nee Fur-der’).

How do you say Szechenyi Baths in Hungarian?

Széchenyi Fürdő is pronounced Say-chain-nee Fur-der. It is also called Széchenyi Gyógyfürdő (Szechenyi Medical Baths), Say-chain-nee George Fur-der, or even Szecska (setsh-kah) as a term of endearment. Yes, we Hungarians love our Szechenyi Baths.

  1. I just booked a massage at 9 pm and wanted to use the outdoor pools from 8 – 8:45 pm, but I see that there is a party in the evenings in the outdoor pools; so does that mean we can not use the outdoor pools at that time?

    • Szechenyi Spa Baths

Hello Lisette, the night time party on Saturday only starts after 10 pm (at 10:30 pm) in Szechenyi Baths. Day time bath visitors can use the bath facilities that are still open after 7 pm, which are the 3 outdoor pools. These 3 pools are open air, 2 thermal pools and one swimming pool for laps, open until 9:45 pm every day. The indoor pools and saunas, etc. are closed after 7 pm every day.
Unfortunately, we do not schedule massage therapies after 7 pm for the very same reason, so there are no appointments of Szechenyi Baths masseuses after 7 pm.

  2. Hi. The website says we can bring cameras to the normal bath days but not to the sparty… what if it’s a waterproof camera?!

Also: at the sparty: we can buy alcohol, but how do we pay? I was assuming we’d leave our wallets in the lockers.

Also2: on the ticket buying section, for the group tickets, you can only select 11: not 10 or 12 or more.

    • Szechenyi Spa Baths

Hello Simon, the Szechenyi bath party (or Lukacs Bath party) requires a special photo permit, only professional media photographers get press photo permit (true, daytime photos are tolerated by the management).

Payment in the bath parties is with a waterproof party card which you can charge upon arrival. No cash or credit card is accepted inside the bath party area only the party card. Yes, wallets and cards are stored outside in lockers / cabins.

Group tickets: the special group discount is defined as 1 free ticket on top of each 10 ticket batch. Therefore, if you are a group or 12 or more, you will need to buy the tickets in two batches (1 group and some regular)

  3. Can I enter Szechenyi Bath wearing my glasses?
I don’t see a thing without my glasses, so I would be in real trouble walking inside Szechenyi Bath without them.
Am I allowed to wear glasses in Szechenyi Bath?
Is it dangerous to wear glasses in Szechenyi Bath, due to the high temperatures in there?
    Thank you in advance.

    • Szechenyi Spa Baths

Hello Gouvea, yes you can wear your glasses in Szechenyi Baths building, and some people wear it in the thermal pools too. Please note that the bath aims to be a splinter free area, so make sure your spectacles have a spectacle string holder attached (hanging around your neck) to prevent them from falling to the pavement / hard surface, and breaking near the pool areas where many people walk by barefoot. Thank you for your cooperation.

  4. Do I need to know swimming to enter the bath or Is it dangerous to enter the pool if I don’t know swimming?

    • Szechenyi Spa Baths

Hello Max, most of the thermal pools are quite shallow for an adult with average height, so you can even just sit in the pool on the steps to enjoy the hot spring waters. Do avoid the swimming pool though as it is only for swimmers. Please ask for more detailed guidance from the staff by the pools, and read the signs that give information about the depth of the pools in meters.

  5. I booked a ticket for monday and confermion from paypal but not from your place is it ok?

  6. Hi,
Is it safe for my wife, who is pregnant, to use the baths?

    • Szechenyi Spa Baths

Hello Blake, your wife is kindly asked to consult with her doctor / GYN if they think it is safe for her to visit the thermal pools. Each pregnancy is different, so it is safest to consult with a specialist about attending public baths, thermal baths, etc.

  11. Hi,

We (2 of us) would like to book a Massage + Bath package. We understand that we need to prebook online for the appointment. What is the last time slot for massage? We intend to go for the evening bath. Thank you.

  12. How much do the flip flops cost if I buy them there? Thanks!

    • Szechenyi Spa Baths

Hello Marta, the vendors are private vendors of the flip flops so the prices may change. They are somewhat more expensive than in a shoe store in the city center, so it is better to buy them in advance. The price of the cheaper flip flops is currently approx HUF 700, while the better quality pairs are HUF 1500. We will soon have an option to buy a bath ticket including a pair of simple flip flops.

  13. Hi!
I booked a ticket for monday 20th and i received confirmation from paypal but not from your place is it ok?

    • Szechenyi Spa Baths

      Dear Dani,

thank you for your day time bath ticket reservation.
We are sending a digital ticket / e-ticket via email for each booking, so please do check your junk mail box too to see your ticket information. If you still have not found it, the paypal notification is enough if you purchased bath entry only (massages need to be confirmed separately as hours are not guaranteed, while bath party tickets need to be printed out)
Please note that checking in with day time bath tickets bought on paypal is at the Help Desk at the main entrance, and NOT at the queues at the cashiers. Your fast track ticket should be used at the Help Desk in the main hall which is opposite the circus building. The cashier will send you to the Help Desk to check in. There are two more entrances, besides the main entrance, so please do not miss the entry point, otherwise you will be standing in the queue at the cashier in vain.

  14. Hi
I booked 4 massages and bath entrance tickets for tomorrow – I have had PayPal confirmation but nothing from you. Is my booking ok?
    Jennifer Taylor

    • Szechenyi Spa Baths

Hello Jennifer, yes, all the 4 deluxe massage treatments have been scheduled for 3.30 pm with a check in time until 2.30 pm. Please check your full mail box for the confirmation email already sent to you (spam box with an email subject: Re: Szechenyi Spa Bath HUF [#327]) Have a nice time! Make sure to enter the bath at the help desk with your online ticket and not at the cashiers (the Help Desk is in the hall opposite the Budapest Circus building).

  15. Hi can we bring in champagne if we bring plastic glasses?

  16. Hello,

We will be stopping by Budapest from 6-8 May. Saw the couple massage and bath rates. Can we have rooms for massage for three pax with pte cabin? If so, what are the rates, and how can we buy/ book in advance?

If we buy the bath tix in advance, can we print out and enter or still need to exchange for tix at the counter? How do we skip the queue? Where do we collect keys for pte cabin or lockers if we don’t need to queue?

If we are buying on the spot, can you advise a less busy time/ day over our travel period? Is may a peak season?

    • Szechenyi Spa Baths

You can check the prices and make your booking on the left side of the following page:

If you do not wish to buy a fast track entry online, you can buy a regular bath ticket (without fast track) on the spot. I would recommend you to arrive in the early hours (around 9-10 am), because it is the less busy time of the day in the baths. May 1 and the weekends in May (Fri – Sun) are typically quite busy.

You can find more useful information and detailed answers to your questions here:

  17. Ana Maria Ruiz

I was wondering if you could spend the morning, leave the building and come back later in the afternoon.
Also, how much is to only rent a locker and not the cabin?

    • Szechenyi Spa Baths

      Dear Ana Maria,
Please note that all of our tickets are single passes, not multipasses.
Tickets with locker are available only at the cashier of the Baths, they cannot be booked online in advance. The prices are the following:
Ticket with a locker on weekend: HUF 4,400
Ticket with a locker on weekdays: HUF 4,200

  19. Hello i and my girlfriend want buy a fast ticket online. my question is:

if we want take only one cabin, can we buy a fast ticket without cabin and one with it and then dividing the cabin or not?

    • Szechenyi Spa Baths

      Dear Ambrogio,
unfortunately there are no fast track tickets without cabin, but of course you can share one cabin if you wish. However, please note that the cabins at Szechenyi Bath can comfortably take up 1 person, and a bit more tightly even a couple to get changed.

  20. I booked a ticket for Monday 15th Feb and I received confirmation from paypal but not from your place. Is it ok to bring confirmation from paypal only? or if you have already send your confirmation email to me, please resend it to me?

I am visiting Budapest in July however i am unsure what dates i will be there. I do not want to miss out on the sparty! I am just wondering do the saturday night spa parties sell out? Or will i be able to get tickets when i am there in July?

    • Szechenyi Spa Baths

      Dear Rachel,
Booking your ticket in advance is highly recommended, as tickets are usually sold out pretty soon.

  22. Hey we have booked a holiday to Budapest and recenttly found out I am pregnant!!! Bit of a shock but was wondering are there any policies for pregnant women using the thermal baths or pools?? Especially early pregnancy?

    • Szechenyi Spa Baths

      Hi Emma,
      first of all, congratulations!
I am afraid though that I have to advise against the visit of Szechenyi Baths (or any thermal baths), as some pools contain hot thermal water (between 33 and 40 degrees Celsius) which is not recommended for pregnant mothers.
During pregnancy please keep consulting with your doctor whenever you intend to visit public baths, shared pools. Pregnant women are kindly asked to consult with their doctor /OBGYN if they can bathe in the thermal waters in Budapest too, and what – if any – precautions they need to make before entering the pools.
      Thank you for your understanding.

  23. Are there any baths or pools under 38 degrees Celsius? If so, which ones?

    • Szechenyi Spa Baths

      Dear Michelle,

in fact, quite a few of the 18 pools are under 38 degrees, some of the indoor thermal pools are under 38 degrees, one dynamic thermal (outdoor) pool is 30-34 degrees, and also the outdoor swimming pool, which is 26-28 degrees. You can find the actual temperature of the pools in Szechenyi Baths on the signs by each pool (given in Celsius only). Have a nice time in Budapest!

  24. If I purchase a bath party pass, does this automatically grant me entrance to the baths in the day time?
If not, is there a discount pass available to those who want to enjoy the baths in the day time and then stay for the party?

    • Szechenyi Spa Baths

      Dear Eleni,
Although the venue is the same, unfortunately the Sparty event belongs to a different company, which means that you need to purchase ticket for daytime use and ticket for Szechenyi Spa Party. Please do not buy the day time entry for the bath party, as the day time entry is only valid until 10 pm (check in until 6 pm), while the party entry is valid from 10.30 pm. If you wish to visit Szechenyi Baths during the day, you can book your ticket online: http://szechenyispabaths.com/booking/
Booking Budapest Spa Party Ticket: http://szechenyispabaths.com/booking-bath-party-tickets/
Unfortunately even if you have the Sparty Ticket, you cannot stay in the Baths – you need to leave the building, and go back for the Sparty.

  25. Hello ! I booked a ticket for tomorrow morning (8th september) and I received confirmation from paypal but not from your place. Is it ok to bring confirmation from paypal only? or if you have already send your confirmation email to me, please resend it to me?

    Thank you !

    • Szechenyi Spa Baths

      Dear Lisa,
we have re-sent the confirmation e-mail, please check your spam box as well if you don’t find it in your inbox. Have a lovely time in the Baths!

  26. Hi. My friends and I will be in Budapest on the 23rd of October. I understand it’s a public holiday so I want to ask if you’re open that day. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, we would not be able to experience the pools. Is it possible for us to just visit and have a tour of the place, see all the pools? If yes, can we pre-book?

    • Szechenyi Spa Baths

      Dear Cait,
thank you for your inquiry. Szechenyi Baths will be open on Oct 23, as the normal opening hours, although weekend prices will apply: http://szechenyispabaths.com/szechenyi-baths-opening-hours-on-october-23/
You can buy Visitor Tickets on the spot at the cashiers, HUF 1,700/person; unfortunately you cannot book them in advance. There is a hostess who will guide you through the Baths. Usually Guests do not need to wait, unless the Baths is extremely busy (on the weekends, for example).
Have a great time in Budapest!

  27. What is the temperature of the water in each pool?

    • Szechenyi Spa Baths

      Dear vmz,
      there are 11 indoor thermal pools 28 °C – 40 °C, the swimming pool (outdoor) is 26 °C – 28 °C, 1 outdoor activity pool with whirlpool elements is 30 °C – 34 °C, 1 outdoor thermal pool is 38 °C. There is also 1 cooling pool (indoor) 20 °C, and an immersion pool -18 °C. There also 2 immersion pools indoor, 18 °C.

  28. Hi
I would like to ask if the outdoor leisure pool with whirl pool be available for use on the 21 oct or 22 October 2016?

I would also like to know if the cabin changing room can store a large luggage bag? I plan to visit the bath before my train in the evening.
